Cryptocurrency trading has attracted interest from Indian investors, but using a crypto exchange involves financial, tax and security risks. People considering platforms such as Binance should understand identity verification requirements, Indian tax rules and the importance of keeping accurate transaction records.
Binance is a global cryptocurrency exchange. However, investors should not assume that access to a trading platform removes their responsibility to comply with Indian law.
Why Does KYC Matter?
Know Your Customer (KYC) is the process through which a financial platform verifies a user’s identity. Depending on the platform and applicable requirements, this may involve identity documents, personal details and other verification checks.
KYC helps platforms identify customers and supports compliance with anti-money-laundering rules. Users should provide information only through the platform’s verified website or official application.
Before depositing money, investors should check the platform’s current registration and compliance status with India’s Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND), where applicable. Registration for anti-money-laundering purposes should not be confused with approval of an investment product or a guarantee against losses.
How Are Cryptocurrency Gains Taxed in India?
India has a specific tax framework for income from the transfer of virtual digital assets. Under Section 115BBH of the Income-tax Act, 1961, applicable to the relevant tax framework, income from transferring virtual digital assets is generally taxed at 30%, along with applicable surcharge and cess.
The rules also restrict the deduction of expenses and the setting off of losses from such transfers, subject to the applicable law. Section 194S provides for tax deducted at source on certain virtual digital asset transfers, generally at 1% of the consideration when the statutory conditions are met.
Investors should not treat this deduction as their final tax liability. TDS and the tax payable on income are different matters.
India’s Income-tax Act, 2025 also includes provisions for reporting crypto-asset transactions. Investors should consult the rules applicable to the relevant financial year and assessment period rather than assuming every provision remains unchanged.
Why Should Investors Maintain Records?
Investors should keep records of purchases, sales, transfers, fees and transaction dates. Exchange statements, bank records and transaction histories can help establish what happened and support tax reporting.
Moving cryptocurrency between wallets is not necessarily the same as selling it, but the tax treatment depends on the transaction and applicable rules. Investors should maintain records even when a transfer does not immediately produce a gain.
A qualified tax professional can help explain how the rules apply to complex transactions.
How Can Users Protect Their Accounts?
Use a strong, unique password and enable multi-factor authentication. Never share an account password, recovery phrase, one-time password or wallet private key with another person.
Be cautious of social media accounts offering guaranteed returns, account recovery services or special investment opportunities. Scammers may create websites that look like genuine exchanges.
Investors should also understand the risks of volatile prices, leverage, exchange outages and losing access to a wallet.
What Should Investors Check Before Trading?
Before using Binance or any other crypto exchange, verify its current regulatory and compliance status, understand the fees and withdrawal conditions, and read the platform’s risk disclosures.
Cryptocurrency is not a guaranteed route to wealth. Prices can fall sharply, and investors may lose a substantial part or all of the money they put at risk.
The most important steps are to verify the platform, understand the tax rules, protect account access and never invest money that is needed for essential expenses.
