Asian equities were poised to follow weaker US stock performance as selling pressure in technology shares intensified, renewing investor caution over lofty valuations and heavy spending by tech firms. This trend extended into early Asian trading, with futures across major markets in the region moving lower.
Benchmark regional measures, including the MSCI Asia Pacific Index, opened with declines as investors reduced exposure to tech companies and rotated toward sectors seen as less risky. South Korea’s Kospi, an index closely tied to artificial intelligence related stocks and among the top performers globally this year, recorded some of the steepest losses.
Concerns about stretched valuations and corporate spending drove selling across a range of technology subsectors, including software firms and chipmakers. The momentum slump in tech was reflected in US markets prior to the Asian session, where major indexes like the Nasdaq faced notable pressure.
Cryptocurrencies also extended their downturn, with bitcoin trading lower amid broader risk-off sentiment. Treasuries and the US dollar showed mixed moves as traders grappled with uncertainty around tech sector earnings and future capital expenditure.
Despite the technology downturn, some value and cyclical plays in other industries drew interest as part of a broader market shift, tempering losses in index measures tracking diversified stocks.
