Adani Defence & Aerospace has entered into a strategic partnership with Italian defence major Leonardo to manufacture military helicopters in India, marking a significant moment in New Delhi’s effort to deepen indigenous defence production under the Make-in-India programme.
The collaboration aims to establish a local manufacturing base for helicopters across multiple categories, including roles for surveillance, reconnaissance and utility operations. While specific platforms and production volumes are yet to be formally disclosed, the partnership is positioned as a long-term industrial arrangement rather than a limited assembly exercise, with an emphasis on localisation, supply-chain development and technology integration.
Leonardo, one of Europe’s largest aerospace and defence companies, brings decades of experience in rotary-wing aircraft, avionics and mission systems. For Adani Defence, the tie-up strengthens its growing footprint in India’s defence sector, where it has steadily expanded across aerospace, ammunition, unmanned systems and electronic warfare.
The agreement also reflects a broader shift in India’s defence procurement strategy — away from outright imports and towards co-development and domestic manufacturing involving private players. Policymakers have increasingly sought to reduce dependence on foreign suppliers while building export-capable defence platforms.
Beyond industrial considerations, the partnership carries geopolitical weight. Italy’s participation adds to the widening pool of European defence firms aligning with India’s strategic manufacturing ambitions, reinforcing New Delhi’s push to position itself as a credible global defence production hub rather than merely a buyer.
