The Union government is preparing to roll out a landmark policy aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing of next-generation railway technology and components, in a move designed to deepen local supply chains and reduce import dependence.
According to officials familiar with the proposal, the forthcoming framework seeks to encourage indigenous production of advanced railway systems, critical parts and high-technology equipment. The policy is expected to focus on strengthening design capabilities, fostering innovation ecosystems and enhancing private sector participation in rail infrastructure development.
The initiative aligns with the broader push for self-reliance in strategic sectors, particularly in transport infrastructure, where modernisation and safety upgrades are ongoing priorities. By incentivising local manufacturing, the government aims to position Indian firms as competitive suppliers not only for domestic projects but also for export markets.
Industry stakeholders anticipate that the policy could provide clarity on procurement norms, technology partnerships and potential fiscal incentives. Greater localisation of railway technology manufacturing is also expected to generate skilled employment and catalyse ancillary industries.
As India undertakes large-scale railway expansion and modernisation, the proposed policy signals an attempt to embed advanced manufacturing capacity within the country’s long-term infrastructure strategy.
